With hundreds of combinations of materials, designs, and septic solutions available; it can feel like you have to have a PhD in septic systems to know which is right for you.

Fortunately, D&L Environmental is here to help you navigate this sometimes confusing world. Read this article to learn everything you need to form a basic knowledge of available septic systems so that you can get the one best for you!

The Types of Septic Systems & Why It is Right For You

Type 1: Tank-Based Septic Systems

Septic systems are separated into three distinct categories.

The first is tank-based. These consist of a large underground tank designed to receive and settle wastewater.

‘Settling’ is when heavier solids sink to the bottom of a tank, separating from oils and grease that remains at the top.

Over time, bacteria break down the accumulation of solid waste. Presuming a well-cared-for tank, approximately 50-60% of solid accumulation can be expected to be removed naturally by this bacteria.

The solid waste that cannot be processed naturally by bacteria must be removed by septic pumping companies like D&L Environmental.

Type 2: Tank + Treatment Septic Systems

Type 1 systems rely on anaerobic bacteria to process solid waste. This type of bacteria does not require oxygen to live.

Type 2 systems have mechanisms that introduce oxygen into your tank, to increase the bacterial breakdown of solid waste. Aerobic bacteria is very good at consuming and processing this material, and so it’s presence increases the efficiency of your septic system.

Type 2 systems are typically best in specific circumstances. When space is not available for an adequately sized type 1 systems, these systems can accommodate more waste in smaller space. When surrounding soil cannot safely receive septic effluent, they are also very useful!

Like type 1, type 2 systems also require septic pumping on a regular basis!

Type 3: Tank + Treatment + Filtration

Type 3 tanks will store waste, integrate oxygen to increase efficiency, and use a variety of systems to completely filter septic effluent.

Often these systems will use a peat filter to remove all particulate from effluent and disinfect it with chlorine, ozone, or UV light. As a further measure, sand filters are also available to further reduce any pathogens from processed effluent.

Type 3 systems are rare, generally only seen when soil is very shallow and space is restricted. Like type 2 and 1 systems, they still require regular (but generally less regular) vacuum pumping to remove solid waste accumulations.

Septic Pumping With D&L Environmental

Many residents of Kelowna and surrounding areas use septic systems and associated oxygenation/filtration technology to minimise the environmental impact of processing solid waste.

To ensure the maximum environmental benefit from your septic system, it’s important that you ensure your septic pumping is performed by a service provider that shares your concern for environmental stewardship.
