A vacuum truck is a tank truck with a powerful vacuum pump that pulls liquids, sludge and slurry through a hose into a sealed tank, then hauls the load away for proper disposal. It’s the truck behind septic pumping, grease trap cleaning, catch basin and sump cleaning, oil-water separator pumping, dewatering and spill cleanup.

Vacuum trucks do a lot more than pump septic tanks. Ours work across the Okanagan on everything from residential septic systems to industrial cleaning and spill response. Here’s what a vacuum truck is, how it works and what it’s used for.

What makes a vacuum truck

A vacuum truck has two main parts: a powerful vacuum pump and a large, sealed tank. The pump pulls liquids and sludge into the tank, and the truck then carries the load to a facility that can accept it.

The most common load is septage from septic tanks. Vacuum trucks also carry grease trap waste, industrial liquids, sludge and slurry.

How a vacuum truck works

A vacuum truck works like a very large shop vacuum. The pump removes air from the tank to create a strong vacuum. When the operator opens the valves on the suction hose, the pressure difference pulls liquids and sludge up the hose and into the tank. The tank is sealed, so nothing escapes on the way to disposal.

Because the job is done on site in one pass, a vacuum truck is faster, safer and more practical than cleaning a tank by hand. Trained crews handle the waste without direct contact and follow safety procedures throughout, and the truck’s large tank carries a lot of material in a single trip.

What vacuum trucks are used for

  • Septic pumping for homes, businesses, strata properties and mobile home parks (septic tank pumping)
  • Grease trap cleaning for restaurants and commercial kitchens (grease trap cleaning)
  • Oil-water separator pumping for commercial, industrial and municipal sites
  • Catch basin, sump and storm drain cleaning, including car wash sumps (sewer flusher truck)
  • Dewatering and sludge removal for flooded basements, parking lots, construction sites and sludge ponds
  • HDD slurry and drilling mud cleanup (HDD slurry cleanup)
  • Emergency spill cleanup for hazardous and non-hazardous materials, 24/7
  • Environmental tank cleaning for commercial and industrial tanks

Construction sites are a good example. Sites near hills or on wet ground often collect mud and water that have to be removed before work can continue, and a vacuum truck clears it so crews can get on with the job.

Vacuum trucks are also the tool of choice when hazardous materials spill. The sealed tank contains the material from the moment it’s picked up, which limits the spread and protects workers and the environment.

Vacuum trucks vs. hydrovac trucks

A hydrovac truck adds a pressurized water system to a vacuum truck so it can dig as well as remove material. Hydrovacs are used for non-destructive excavation, such as daylighting buried utilities; vacuum trucks handle liquid and sludge removal. Read more in our guide to hydrovac excavation.

D&L Environmental has more than 35 years of experience in vacuum truck work. We run DOT-certified trucks, tanks, hoses and trailers, including 3,000-gallon PUP trailers for high-volume jobs, and we’re a licensed and bonded hazardous waste transporter (LT0993). We provide environmental waste manifests for regulated material, and our two full-time heavy-duty mechanics keep the fleet in top shape. If you’re on a septic system in the Okanagan, you’ve probably had a visit from a vacuum truck already. Hopefully it was one of ours.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a vacuum truck and a hydrovac truck?

A vacuum truck removes and transports liquids, sludge and slurry. A hydrovac truck adds pressurized water so it can dig.

What can a vacuum truck pump?

Septic tanks, grease traps, oil-water separators, catch basins and sumps, sludge ponds, flooded basements and parking lots, HDD slurry and spills.

Do you handle hazardous waste?

Yes. D&L Environmental is a licensed and bonded hazardous waste transporter (LT0993), with DOT-certified trucks and environmental waste manifests.
