Hydrovac excavation in Summerland

Most of our Summerland work is hydrovac excavation: more than 90 jobs at more than 60 sites since 2020. Contractors, utilities, municipalities and property owners use our trucks to daylight buried lines before they dig, cut narrow trenches beside existing services, and dig clean holes for footings, poles and posts, on town lots and on rural, orchard and vineyard properties alike.

A hydrovac digs with pressurized water and a powerful vacuum instead of a bucket. The water breaks up the soil, the vacuum lifts it into a debris tank on the truck, and buried gas lines, water mains, power and fibre are exposed without being struck. Our trucks carry 10-inch booms and up to 200 feet of remote hose, so crews can reach spots the truck can’t, and heated water cuts through frozen ground in winter.

How a daylighting job runs

  1. You request locates through BC 1 Call, and the line owners mark or clear their lines.
  2. Our crew sets up beside the marked area and cuts the soil with pressurized water.
  3. The vacuum lifts the slurry into the truck as the hole is dug, so the site stays clean.
  4. The exposed line is confirmed, measured and marked for the crew that follows.
  5. The slurry is hauled away for disposal.

Planning a dig

  • Request locates before any ground disturbance, and keep the marks visible
  • Tell us about access: gates, slopes, soft ground or a hole far from where a truck can park
  • Allow extra time for frozen ground in winter
  • Plan where the work area needs protecting, such as lawns, landscaping or vines

Why hydrovac suits rural and agricultural properties

Orchards, vineyards and acreages often have irrigation lines, power to pumps and outbuildings, and older services that aren’t on any drawing. A backhoe can tear through those in a second. A hydrovac exposes them gently, so you can see what’s there before anything is installed or repaired, and the small hole means less damage to rows, roots and lawns. Because the soil goes into the truck, there’s no spoil pile to move afterwards.
